Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one's youth. Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them; they shall not be ashamed, but shall speak with their enemies in the gate.

Psalm 127:3-5

Day 2, Saturday, December 13

Having left the Balzers after a delicious baked oatmeal breakfast this morning, we start on the long road across Kansas and the "pan-handles" of Oklahoma and Texas.

I have never seen more flat or desolate plains of land. It is so lonely and the wind sighs and wails relentlessly across the plain, tossing tumble-weed and stirring up the dry earth. We drove parallel to the same railway for hours. One town in Kansas, Greensburg, had recently been raised to the ground by a tornado...there were shelters everywhere for people whose homes had been destroyed. It was dreadful to see the absolute devestation. Even miles after we had left town we could recognize the path of the storm by trees that seemed to have gone through a blender.

This is a common sight...
Sammy likes to see the "horse-head" pumps at work...up and down, up and down; but even more he loves when we run over tumble weed. We could never get it on video because they (the tumble weed) hop along so fast, but they actually burst in an explosion of seeds and twigs when they get run over. These balls of dead brush pile up against fences and literally fill ditches looking like huge piles of brown cotton balls.

The most beautiful thing we saw all day was the sunset, red and gold and blue, stretching away over a vast and featureless horizon. Of course there was a truck right in front of us that exhibited no intention of changing course any time soon, so he is in the picture as well. Trucks, we have decided, are the nemesis of all driving vacationers.

Our stop tonight is a little town between Albuquerque and Gallup, New Mexico called Grants.
We will stay in a hotel there and drive to the Grand Canyon tomorrow morning!
